May 4, 2022 marks exactly 32 years since the restoration of Latvia’s independence after decades of Soviet occupation. On May 4, 1990, Latvia proclaimed its independence from the USSR, and the restoration of the Republic of Latvia. As well as speeches and parades, recent years have seen a new tradition taking root which brings friends and families together around a “white tablecloth” to share memories of the past and hopes for the future. Others make it a point to don folk dress for the day.
